From A Stone

A response on Pop My Mind to the Let’s Talk theme around mental health and it’s connections to art.

Most of the stresses and anxieties I have can be linked back to my hands. Being prone to RSI causes a lot of pain that feeds into fears of not being able to make work, or of never being able to make enough.  And it’s easy to feel betrayed by your own hands – why won’t they make better work? why can’t they work faster? why aren’t they good enough?

So you push yourself all the time, and if you don’t take a step back to breathe now and again, getting anything else creative out of yourself is like getting blood from a stone.

New Year, New Goals, New Things For Sale!

I think I just need to accept that I am never going to be one of those people who regularly and consistently updates a blog of any kind. It’s just not meant to be. But! 2016 is here, I have lots of big plans and goals, both illustration-wise and life-wise, and I’ve already gotten started. One of my goals was to doodle something every day, and though I haven’t managed every day so far, I have managed some, which is better than none. Starting in February, though, I think I’ll start posting the doodles on my sketch blog or on my twitter. The January ones I won’t, because I’ve been doodling things related to my next Big Project, that is still mostly in planning stages so I don’t want to jinx it by posting about it too much.

As for things for sale, since Valentines Day is coming up, I whipped up a few card designs that you can get on my Redbubble, but here are the designs for you to see anyway! They are of course terrible animal-based puns, because those are my lifeblood.

Christmas Cards!

Woah, it’s been a while! I have been making things, just not really posting about them at the moment. That and I don’t have an awful lot of free time anymore, but there we go. At any rate, I’m posting now because I have a very festive announcement.

I officially have Christmas cards for sale! If you go to this link here you can see all the designs I have up at the moment. They are of course all based on awful Christmas puns, because who would I be otherwise?

Here are a few of the designs for you to look at before you go over there, though, and if you want a particular pun that I haven’t disgraced the holiday season by making yet, then shoot me a message and I will almost certainly comply with your Festive Frivolity Needs.

Unused Anger Concepts

This weeks post is some of the characters I made but didn’t end up using for a challenge on the Pop My Mind platform, responding to the ‘anger’ concept. So of course I made some punky, cenobite looking things, and also the Alien in glam rock gear (top left). Because of course I did.

The Sten Project – Final Works

It’s done! I finished all the work for the Sten Project I was working on, and so I thought I’d post up the final pieces here for people to see. There will be a section for it on my portfolio site at some point (when I can get the damn thing working again….*angry illustrator noises*), but for now, here are the environments, weapons, ships and scenes that I ended up making for the project. It was really fun to work on, and not in a style I ever thought I’d end up working in, but I enjoyed the work and it was nice to have a way of working that didn’t take three million hours to finish something in.

Sten Character Designs

sten thoreson  bet

Remember all the rough sketches in that previous Sten post? Well, I worked up some more finished character designs, and here they are! In order, we have Sten, then Thoreson, then Bet. I like most of them, but as I usually do I’ll probably end up making more or remaking some of them before I finish them totally for handing in later.

There’s still a lot of Sten work to do, but I’ve done all the heavy lifting really and it’s mostly just a matter of actually making stuff and getting it looking pretty when it’s all printed up.

STEN work

vulcan 1 Sten scene

A bit of a messy post this week, just with some of the stuff I’ve made for my STEN project. What is the STEN project you ask? Well, I’m trying my very hardest to make a bunch of concept/development art for a book called STEN, which is a sci-fi novel by Allan Cole and Chris Bunch. I’ve still got a lot of stuff to do, but I’m working on it!

Featured in this post are:

  • some of the character sketches that I’ve done for three of the character – Sten, our main guy; Bet, the ‘love interest’ but also a very badass and cool girl; and Thoreson, our Big Bad Company Business Villain.
  • a rough environment idea for the exterior of the space station called Vulcan, which is where most of the story is set
  • and a quick painting of a scene from the book, where Sten is forging his knife out of a chunk of crystal

There’s a bonus post up on the sketchblog today too, featuring a few more bits of character development stuff. If you’re following the sketchblog at all, you’ll also be seeing some life drawing, which is always good fun.
