When I Sleep, My Mind Grows Wings

Another piece from last year that I can share now – for a project that fell through, sadly, but a fun one to do nonetheless. This was actually the first piece I used the technique of dropping coloured ink into water to create the blended, dreamy effect – which I then used to create the wings on the Phoenix piece I made this year.

I also filmed the process of painting this, which you can find here!

Serenity In The City

Something from last year I can share now! For an art proposal, looking at themes of staying calm and centered while living in the busy and often overwhelming world. For various reasons I ended up only having about half a week to get this one finished, but I’m still super happy with how it turned out! Creating an effect in my usually minimal ink style to represent crowds and a bustling city was a challenge – one I think I succeeded at, and which gave me a chance to explore a bit more rough, expressive brushwork than I usually get to do.

From A Stone

A response on Pop My Mind to the Let’s Talk theme around mental health and it’s connections to art.

Most of the stresses and anxieties I have can be linked back to my hands. Being prone to RSI causes a lot of pain that feeds into fears of not being able to make work, or of never being able to make enough.  And it’s easy to feel betrayed by your own hands – why won’t they make better work? why can’t they work faster? why aren’t they good enough?

So you push yourself all the time, and if you don’t take a step back to breathe now and again, getting anything else creative out of yourself is like getting blood from a stone.

New Year, New Goals, New Things For Sale!

I think I just need to accept that I am never going to be one of those people who regularly and consistently updates a blog of any kind. It’s just not meant to be. But! 2016 is here, I have lots of big plans and goals, both illustration-wise and life-wise, and I’ve already gotten started. One of my goals was to doodle something every day, and though I haven’t managed every day so far, I have managed some, which is better than none. Starting in February, though, I think I’ll start posting the doodles on my sketch blog or on my twitter. The January ones I won’t, because I’ve been doodling things related to my next Big Project, that is still mostly in planning stages so I don’t want to jinx it by posting about it too much.

As for things for sale, since Valentines Day is coming up, I whipped up a few card designs that you can get on my Redbubble, but here are the designs for you to see anyway! They are of course terrible animal-based puns, because those are my lifeblood.

Christmas Cards!

Woah, it’s been a while! I have been making things, just not really posting about them at the moment. That and I don’t have an awful lot of free time anymore, but there we go. At any rate, I’m posting now because I have a very festive announcement.

I officially have Christmas cards for sale! If you go to this link here you can see all the designs I have up at the moment. They are of course all based on awful Christmas puns, because who would I be otherwise?

Here are a few of the designs for you to look at before you go over there, though, and if you want a particular pun that I haven’t disgraced the holiday season by making yet, then shoot me a message and I will almost certainly comply with your Festive Frivolity Needs.

Unused Anger Concepts

This weeks post is some of the characters I made but didn’t end up using for a challenge on the Pop My Mind platform, responding to the ‘anger’ concept. So of course I made some punky, cenobite looking things, and also the Alien in glam rock gear (top left). Because of course I did.

The Sten Project – Final Works

It’s done! I finished all the work for the Sten Project I was working on, and so I thought I’d post up the final pieces here for people to see. There will be a section for it on my portfolio site at some point (when I can get the damn thing working again….*angry illustrator noises*), but for now, here are the environments, weapons, ships and scenes that I ended up making for the project. It was really fun to work on, and not in a style I ever thought I’d end up working in, but I enjoyed the work and it was nice to have a way of working that didn’t take three million hours to finish something in.
