The second of my entries for ArtOrders Tiny Dragon contest! They added a Not So Tiny Dragons category, and this was what came to me – a tiny dragon that goes after the dead like a carrion bird. I imagine whole flocks of them descending on battlefields after the fighting is done, like pale ghosts that leave after a few hours, rising from skeletons picked clean with blood on their scales.
This one decided to be a challenge for me, and took a whole week longer than I thought it would but I got it done anyway, and that’s what matters. Lighting is unreasonably difficult to paint. Still, I’m pleased with how the head turned out at least, even if the rest of it doesn’t entirely make me happy. Progress, progress.
Hey look, it’s that series that I make one thing a year for! Next in the Lordi Girls series is Evilyn, based on the song of the same name. I still love the concept of what I’m doing, but not so much the way I’m making them anymore. So this probably isn’t the last ever Lordi Girl that I’ll make but the next one’s probably going to look a little different. Maybe. We’ll see.
These illustrations were all created to be paired with the Angela Carter short story ‘Wolf Alice’, about a girl raised by wolves. Once again my love for red/black/white comes through, but it worked for the tone of the story. It was an enjoyable difficulty to make these, as there is a lot of visual language in Angela Carters work, and the story has a lot of gorgeous detail in the words it uses. Still, if you’ve read the story then I hope these images make sense to you, and if you haven’t read it, then maybe they will inspire you to.
